Accomplishments – Social Services & Public Health
- Provided $125,000 for Anchorage Project Access, a program in which doctors donate their services to those most in financial need (2009)
- Secured $100,000 for United Way of Anchorage to continue the Alaska 211 phone number that connects individuals with health and human resources 24 hours a day (2009)
- Provided $100,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Alaska, Anchorage for a statewide mentoring demonstration project (2009).
- Provided $500,000 to Covenant House Alaska for the relocation of the Crisis Center facility in Anchorage (2009)
- Obtained $200,000 for the Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis (AWAIC) Domestic Violence Shelter in Anchorage for infrastructure improvements (2009)
- Provided $280,000 to the Food Bank of Alaska Mat-Su Branch (FY 2008)
- Provided $500,000 to the City of Homer for planning and design of a new drinking water system (2009)
- Provided $500,000 to the City of Soldotna for a water and wastewater improvement project (2009)
- Provided $300,000 to the Municipality of Skagway for a wastewater treatment facility expansion project (2009)
- Provided $500,000 to the City of Buckland for construction of a piped water and sewer system (2009)
- Provided $275,000 to the Kenai Peninsula Food Bank Expansion (FY 2008)
- Secured $300,000 for the Kenai Water and Wastewater System Improvements project to remove arsenic from the water (FY 2008)
- Obtained $1 million for the City of Ketchikan for facilities and equipment at Ketchikan General Hospital (2009)
- Secured $1 million for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Consortium in Bethel for facilities and equipment (2009)
- Protected Village Safe Water from proposed funding cuts and secured an additional $37.5 million last year for rural water and sanitation systems in Alaska.
- Co-sponsored and worked to improve the Indian Health Care Improvement Act to provide assistance to Native Alaskans (was finally included in Health Care bill which she opposed)
- Doubled funding for Low-Income Home Energy Assistance for Alaska to $34 million. Passed 2008 (PL 110-329).
- Secured $10 million for the Denali Commission for Health Facilities (2009).
- Authored and won passage of the Mercury Export Ban Bill (2008, PL 110-414) to prohibit the export of mercury from the US starting in 2013 so as to protect lakes, rivers, oceans, streams, fish, wildlife and people and to establish a secure storage reserve to protect air and groundwater.
- Authored and won passage Amchitka Nuclear Workers Compensation Aid and pushed for final regulations to expand and improve provisions of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Act for Alaskans affected by nuclear tests at Amchitka Island (2004).
- Obtained $7.3 million in funding (2005, FY06 Agriculture Appropriations Bill) for the Mat-Su Valley Hospital Water-Sewer Line Grant to assist in building the necessary water and sewer lines for the new Mat-Su Valley Hospital and Medical Center. The hospital opened in 2007.
- Consistent sponsor of Red Ribbon Week resolution to commemorate national anti-drug efforts in memory of murdered DEA Special Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camerena.
- Secured an exemption from U.S. Department of Transportation rules to allow medical oxygen to be shipped to locations in the bush without being packed in enormous, blowtorch-proof boxes, which are impractical for transportation in rural Alaska.
- Won inclusion of amendments to the Indian Health Care Improvement Reauthorization and Extension Act to: enhance construction of sanitation facilities; authorize repayment of travel costs for family members who escort elders and young children to larger medical centers for emergency care; permanently authorized the Community Health Aide program to ensure basic medical care is available in remote villages; provided more comprehensive behavioral halth services; authorized expansion of long-term care by HIS and tribally-operated hospitals including hospice care, assisted living, community based care, and elder home care.
- Sponsor of Youth Service Day Resolutions (2003-2010): Recognizes and commends the significant contributions of the youth of the United States and encourages the cultivation of a civic bond among young people dedicated to serving their neighbors, their communities, and the nation.
- Sponsored the FASD resolution recognizing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and raising awareness every 9th day of the 9th month (Sept) for 9 months where women can prevent FASD by simply not drinking during the nine months of pregnancy.
